As regular readers will be aware, a campaign to save the Black Cap, Camden, a drag and cabaret venue has been in action since the unceremonious and unannounced closure of the iconic venue in April. Alongside weekly vigils to remember the Cap and engage the community in the fight to save its place in Camden, developments have been made in the venue’s legal future.
This month saw The Breakfast Club, a trendy brunch bar which charges £6.50 for eggs on toast, come out as the prospective new occupiers of the premises. In a blog post addressed to the #WeAreBlackCap community group, the business addresses the resistance to their acquisition of the premises and claims to be the innocent party caught between conflicting interests, and moreover a potential successor to the Black Cap as a place for the community. As #WeAreBlackCap’s response sets out, these claims are questionable considering the acquisition of the venue months prior to its closure and a perceived disregard for queer community and performance who will not find a home in a brunch bar which charges £6.50 for eggs on toast.
In the latest instalment of the fight to preserve The Black Cap, tomorrow sees Kicking Horse (the current owners of the Cap) seek to appeal the Asset of Community Value status that was granted to the venue prior to its closure. The closed appeal hearing will be taking place at Camden Town Hall, Judd Street, WC1H 9JE at 10am on Tuesday 7th July and will see key voices behind the Black Cap, alongside campaigners from the Camden LGBT forum, speak in defence of the ACV status and the Cap’s place in the local queer community’s heart and history.
In support of the ACV status and efforts to challenge Kicking Horse’s action, #WeAreBlackCap are seeking further signatures on a petition which has already received the backing of over 7000 individuals. In the interest of protecting queer spaces, such a large volume of signatures should be heard, so please lend your support to the cause and sign and share the petition at the following address: www.change.org/p/the-new-owners-of-the-black-cap-reopen-the-black-cap
