Following the sudden, unannounced closure and sale of The Black Cap, an iconic LGBTQ venue and drag bar in Camden, the queer community has mobilised and are ready to fight in solidarity!
On Wednesday 15th April, everyone who cared for the iconic drag venue in Camden came together under the banner of #WeAreTheBlackCap, beginning to organise protests and events to defend the venue that was a home and community centre for so many people.
A statement from #WeAreTheBlackCap released on social media today states:
“THIS SATURDAY outside The Black Cap in Camden! 1pm – 5pm!
A protest against the closure of The Black Cap, and a defence of the future of queer spaces in London! Come down and join the fight! Come down dressed in all your finery and fabulosity (although remember it is supposed to be 28 degrees in the sun!)
The Black Cap
171 Camden High Street
London
NW1 7JY
The Black Cap is an historically significant bar and club within the LGBTQ+ community and has played a huge role in queer culture over the last 50+ years. It has been home to legendary drag queens such as Mrs. Shufflewick and Regina Fong to name just a few. Its loss to the regular community who attend the venue is profound.
The protest on Saturday is to express anger at the unceremonious closure of such an iconic venue, to remain visible in the eyes of the public and the owners, and to mobilise the community surrounding The Black Cap to fight for its survival. We stand in solidarity with venues such as the RVT and The Joiner’s Arms and fight against the wider gentrification and closure of LGBTQ+ spaces in London. Come join the protest.
